Peninsulas EMS Council operates under contract with the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services. Through this performance-based contract, PEMS receives payment to provide a number of critical services for the regional EMS system. Among these services are administering certification testing sites, regional planning efforts, quality monitoring and improvement, and production and maintenance of regional patient care protocols. State compensation for these services accounts for approximately 70% of PEMS funding support.
While these services are the backbone of our support to our regional EMS system, there are many other services that the Council provides, administers or supports which are necessary or beneficial to our EMS system. Some notable programs that are not supported through the state contract are various education programs, particularly those targeted to underserved or rural areas, infection control support and training, award recognitions programs, participation in hospital system accreditation programs, etc. These programs include:
- Annual "Celebrate EMS" Day at Busch Gardens - This annual program provides an opportunity for the EMS and hospital providers of our region to meet together with their families each summer and receive the recognition of their communities for their hard work. This popular program would not be possible without the support of our financial partners!
- Annual PEMS Regional EMS Awards Luncheon - This event, held in conjunction with "Celebrate EMS" Day at Busch Gardens, provides an opportunity for our best EMS and hospital providers, administrators and shareholders to receive recognition from their peers for the exceptional work they do. Those selected as PEMS region winners are nominated for selection at the Annual Governor's EMS Awards in November. This luncheon and awards program would not be possible without the support of our financial partners.
In order to fund these programs and others like them, PEMS actively seeks financial partnerships with supporters in the communities that we serve. In return for the financial support to Council operations and programs, PEMS provides public recognition of our partners through various media, including our web and social media presence, our media releases and our written publications.
